If you’re a cruise fan looking for a budget-friendly way to explore the Mediterranean, MSC Cruises might be on your radar. Recently, I had the chance to sail aboard the MSC Splendida, and while it wasn’t my favorite cruise line, it offered a unique experience that was well worth the price. In this blog post, I’ll share my thoughts on the ship, the amenities, and the overall experience to help you decide if an MSC Mediterranean cruise is right for you.
Our Cabin Experience: Fantastica Deluxe Balcony Cabin
We stayed in a Fantastica Deluxe Balcony Cabin, which was very nice and conveniently located. Although the suitcases couldn’t fit under the bed, there was ample storage space to keep everything organized. The cabin itself was comfortable, but the TV left something to be desired. There were no on-demand movies, and the ones available were in other languages—a reminder that MSC is a European cruise line. While this didn’t ruin the experience, it’s something to keep in mind if you’re used to American cruise lines.
Dining on the MSC Splendida
The main dining room was a pleasant surprise. The food was good, and our staff was attentive throughout the cruise. As Fantastica guests, we had timed dining at a shared table, which turned out to be a great experience. We were paired with two couples from the U.S., and my daughter and I enjoyed their company during dinner. If you prefer anytime dining, you’ll need to upgrade to the Aurea experience. Overall, the dining experience was enjoyable and added a social element to the trip.
Pools and Sunbathing on the MSC Splendida
The ship’s main pool was large and inviting, with plenty of hot tubs to relax in. However, like many other cruise lines, there was the common issue of people reserving chairs with towels and then disappearing for hours. It felt like the pool area was more of a towel display than a sunbathing spot! On the bright side, the retractable roof over one of the pools was a fantastic feature, and the aft pool offered a quieter option for relaxation. While we didn’t have access to the Yacht Club pools, I’ve heard they’re incredible and worth exploring on a future cruise.
Entertainment: Shows and Performances
The entertainment on the MSC Splendida was a mixed bag. Some shows were fantastic, while others left us scratching our heads. Regardless of the themes, the singers, dancers, and other performers were incredibly talented, making even the oddest shows enjoyable. If you’re open to experiencing something different, the entertainment on MSC is worth checking out.
Cultural Differences: What to Expect on a European Cruise Line
As someone accustomed to American cruise lines, a few cultural differences stood out. For example, there was no included ice cream—a staple on most U.S. cruises—and the only complimentary drinks were water, hot tea, coffee with milk, and juice at breakfast. I missed having lemonade, but I managed to make iced tea by pouring hot tea over ice. Announcements were made in five languages, which was impressive but also time-consuming, especially before shows. These differences didn’t ruin the cruise but were noticeable adjustments.
Ports and Excursions: A Taste of the Mediterranean
We visited several beautiful ports, each offering a glimpse of what you could explore with more time. It was exactly what we wanted—a sampler of Mediterranean destinations. MSC’s unique embarkation and disembarkation process at every port was a highlight. It added flexibility and eliminated the massive crowds typically seen on other cruise lines. This feature alone made the experience more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts on the MSC Splendida
While MSC isn’t my favorite cruise line, it’s a great option for budget-conscious travelers. I’d love to try the Yacht Club experience, as I’ve heard amazing things about its exclusivity and amenities. For families, especially larger ones like mine, MSC offers an affordable way to cruise together. Would I sail with MSC again? Absolutely—if the price and itinerary are right.
